Come to Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, to experience the grandeur of Mt. Washington and the skiing in the Tuckerman Ravine area. March is a great time to explore, because the weather is just beginning to moderate from winter and the snows are beginning to peak.
Bring your skins and your favorite touring gear, be it telemark skis, a split snowboard, or alpine touring skis.
Our goal is to expand touring beyond skinning up our lift-served resort and experience a tour with a great group of like-minded Patrollers in the backcountry. While the primary focus is on skinning and skiing, participants should be prepared for some hiking, depending on conditions. Topics will include trip planning, weather and trail resources, self-sufficiency, group dynamics, and safe, efficient, fun travel in the backcountry.
This is a one-day adventure. We will meet with our day-pack gear (including our Ten Essentials) in the basement of the Pinkham Visitor Center for a gear check. The group will then go up to the restuarant for a traditional “Pinkham Breakfast” where the trip plan is finalized before we embark up the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. The first stop is the Hermit Lake Shelter, from there, the itinerary takes us through several learning activities, some MTR travel-based, others Nordic Backcountry-oriented.
For those seeking lodging before or after, the AMC operates the Joe Dodge Lodge right in the hotel, which would be the Glenn House Hotel one mile further up the highway. North Conway, Jackson, and Intervale lie below Mt Washington with lots of great restaurants and places to stay.
