Closing an NSP Course

Training local candidates and employees of the resort does not require course administration through NSP because the resort owner already manages the risks and liabilities of training Ski Patrolling activities for their employees and volunteer Patrollers.

Whenever students gather from multiple resorts, the event is considered a Regional course and must have regional oversight.  The local resort hosts the event by providing a venue but is not responsible for the actions of the various NSP Instructors or the students.

National Ski Patrol carries “Event/Training Liability Insurance” for regional and division-based events to cover the activities of the NSP Instructors. NSP’s insurance also extends to the local patrol as long as the courses being taught follow the published NSP curriculum. However, this insurance does not activate unless the NSP Instructors follow the procedures for sanctioning official training courses by requesting an NSP Course using the form found on the Center for Learning:

Certificates of Event Insurance

Some venues hosting NSP training events require that IORs provide proof of insurance.  If your mountain requests a certificate of insurance or an insurance binder, the NSP national office in Lakewood, Colorado, will issue one.  It may take up to 14 days, so please be proactive and plan well in advance.  To request a “Certificate of Event Insurance,” please use the CONTACT US page on NSP.ORG to reach out to the education department.
